Lucite Love
Posted on June 1, 2007 at 3:54 pm (PST) |I fully intended to write this post as a diatribe to my distaste for the Lucite heel. I’m rather fond of the Lucite jewelry that has been popping up on the runway and in magazines; thick rings and bangles stacked in pairs of twos or threes. I like the accessories because they are understated; adding a bit of style to a busy outfit without taking anything away from the garment. Perhaps my aversion to the Lucite heel began with my high school history teacher, Mrs. Mullen, who would wear her 70’s Lucite-heeled pumps everyday during the holiday season. They had Christmas trees and floating glitter and were absolutely atrocious. She would also tell us about the shoes she had with real goldfish swimming around in the heel, which I’m not sure I really believed. I loved her, but certainly did not want to wear her shoes. I began looking for Lucite heels I despised (of which there are plenty out there) and came across these three luxurious pumps that look to be almost floating because of their Lucite bottoms. Donna Karan first brought the trend to the runway during her spring ’07 show featuring myriad sky-high heels teetering on their Lucite wedges. My favorites were these two; one in a packing-tape tan and another in an almost-yellow patent leather. The back zipper detail adds a bit streetwise style to the shoe that incorporates Karan’s overarching spring theme: nature meets city chic. It is these Martin Margiela pumps though, that stole my heart. The look is almost rustic with their buttery brown leather and wood soles. The t-strap adds a bit of school girl charm that at 30% off, I just can’t resist.
